Overview of the Current Ford Mustang

When people think of Ford, some automatically gravitate to Mustang, an American car with a diverse history. It’s been in continuous production since 1964, as a sporty, youthful car, and is the longest-produced Ford nameplate!

Currently, in its sixth generation, the Ford Mustang was developed as a highly-styled line of sporty convertibles and coupes derived from existing model lines. Mustang body styles have rapidly proved to be a success, and even inspired a whole domino effect of “pony car” competitors, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger.

Mustang body styles through the years have continuously evolved. By 1969, the Ford Mustang could be anything from a fancy six-cylinder Coupe to a powerful Boss 429 Fastback. It’s this type of versatility that’s been key to the success of the Mustang. However, there was a car that came before it that should be mentioned.

European Ford Mustang

Before the Mustang became global in 2014, Europe had its own equivalent, the Ford Capri. From the very beginning, this car was meant to be the European Ford Mustang. It was a rear-wheel-drive, 2+2 coupe (two front seats for the driver/front passenger, as well as two small rear seats for other usages) that could be used for specific destinations or long adventures.

We’ve created a list of some similarities and differences between the Ford Capri and Ford Mustang:

Mustang and Capri Similarities:

The third-generation Mustang and second-generation Capri were all built on the Fox platform. The two similar cars also had most of the same engine and drivetrain options. The 2.3L inline four-cylinder with and without a turbo, the 3.3 inline 6, 4.2L V8, and 5.0 engines were available in both cars. Additionally, the exterior and interior look of these cars were quite similar with very few changes.

Capri and Mustang Differences:

Besides the obvious grille and badges, not much was different between these two cars. While they did have a similar engine and drivetrain options, some options were specific to the brand. The 2.8 L V6 was Capri only, while the Mustang had the 171ci/2.8L inline 4. While both cars share the same DNA and parts are interchangeable, today you’re less likely to run across a Ford Capri than its far more popular Mustang twin.
